Setting a holiday table for family and friends is one of my favorite things, especially when it’s part of the annual Christmas Tablescape Hop!
Even last year — while recovering from foot surgery and using a knee scooter — I styled the Enchanting Winter Woodland Tablescape for Christmas.
Today, I’m joining 20 talented bloggers to share festive table settings and centerpieces. Our large group is organized by hostess extraordinaire, Rita of Panoply.
My holiday table, centerpiece and decorated chandelier were all inspired by a visit to Dollar Tree. While there to pickup fall crafting supplies, I realized the store was already stocked with Christmas items. One woman had filled an entire shopping cart, and was well on her way to stuffing a second, lol!
That’s when I noticed all the items depicting a vintage red pickup truck touting a Christmas tree. For under $11, I’ve styled a nostalgic holiday table theme with my existing seasonal tableware and decorations.

Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Pam of Everyday Living starts off this year’s hop, and you don’t want to miss her wonderful Nutcracker Parade! Several years ago, I shared my own Nutcracker Collection Christmas Centerpiece & Table. So, during the same visit to Dollar Tree, I picked up nutcracker items for a planned update to the Christmas Day setting.
Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree
For this year’s holiday table, I selected 20-year old Pfaltzgraff Nordic dishes (retired). They get used for Casual Christmas Table & Bar and winter theme settings, throughout the months of December and January. And, with an evergreen tree depicted on the dessert plate and mug, they are perfect for a Bringing Home the Christmas Tree theme.
Covering the round glass kitchen table is a forest green tablecloth, with red-handle flatware flanking each of four place settings.
And, I couldn’t resist using one of my favorite holiday napkin folds —the ever(green) popular Christmas tree!
I’ve used it twice before on a holiday table, but standing upright at each place setting.
See it incorporated into both the Downhill Dinner at Ski Cabin Winter Table, and Woodland Tablescape for Christmas.
The standing version of the Christmas tree napkin fold would also work well for serving large groups from a holiday table buffet.
Imagine 12-24 arranged on a large tray or platter — like a forest of napkin shape trees! And you could use a variety of napkin fabrics, like holiday prints, plaids or checks. Spread a little faux snow around and voila, instant Christmas tree lot! An easy and festive way to decorate the buffet tabletop too.

Family Tree on Wheels
Also at each place setting is a glass (Pottery Barn a few years ago) decorated with images of a vintage red car, touting home a Christmas tree.
Remember those station wagons with the wood siding? Growing up, did your family have one?
New this year, are the little metal votive holders (Dollar Tree). Each red truck is carrying a star-topped Christmas tree. And if you look to the back of the picture, you’ll see a mini string of lights (Dollar Tree, requires two AA batteries) depicting a similar truck.
Shopping Tip: When I purchased the candle holders, the store carried three other designs, including a “Merry Christmas” tree, snowman and Santa.
Come evening, a lit candle glows to illuminate the word, “Noel.”
Forest Centerpiece
For this year’s holiday table theme, I styled a new centerpiece incorporating just $3 worth of red truck embellishments (Dollar Tree).
First, I took an evergreen shaped, pie stand. During the holiday season, the tiered rack usually holds extra Pfaltzgraff plates on the kitchen island. It’s handy for emptying the dishwasher or setting the table and bar.
Next, I placed woodcut chargers on the two bottom racks of the pie stand. A snowflake glass dish sits on top.
The woodcuts and bowl provided the underlying structure to “plant” or support a rising forest of trees. Then, I wrapped a wide ribbon — decorated with another vintage red truck and snowy tree scene — around the base of the pie rack.
Two more Dollar Tree finds decorate the bottom woodcut tier, along with the strand of mini lights. Pictured above is another truck carrying a tree.
On the opposite side of the holiday table is a small wooden sign shaped like a mason jar. It’s my favorite vintage red truck find at Dollar Tree. I love how they all generate a warm feeling of nostalgia, even if the vintage trucks were before my time.

Bottlebrush, sisal and birch trees decorate all three tiers of the pie rack, with a few chunks of “ice” here and there.

Finally, here is part of the centerpiece lit up at night. A green LED light glows from within the truck.
Baby It’s Cold Outside
Overhead, icicles and snowflakes dangle from the decorated chandelier.
I frequently decorate a chandelier to tie-in with a theme tablescape and to extend the centerpiece vertically.
This year, I added six light-up icicle Christmas tree ornaments. Even when they aren’t glowing icy blue, they sparkle. Yes Virginia, they also came from Dollar Tree (two in a package, batteries included)!
All the other icicles, snowflakes, greenery and strings of beads/crystals I’ve had for years.
I’ll probably leave the chandelier decorated as it is until late January.
It’ll nicely compliment any of the winter theme tables I routinely set, including Polar Bear Frolic and Moose Toboggan Ride. As well as one of 5 Snowman Centerpieces and the Building a Snowman Table Setting.
Hubby and I will enjoy this holiday table setting and centerpiece for the next few weeks. It’ll be perfect for the night the family arrives to decorate the live tree in the family room.
But for the week heading into Christmas, I’ll switch over to the vintage-look, Twas the Night Before Christmas Eve Dishes and Table.

Christmas Tree Family Traditions
Except for our first Christmas living in an apartment, Mr. Buzz has always insisted on a live tree in the family room. But, it wasn’t until our sons were little, that we began cutting down a tree at Hozaks Farm.
That first year, it started to snow just as we headed out in a hay wagon. By the time hubby was sawing down the tree, snow blanketed the woods. It was magical.
Years later, I made eldest son a Bringing Home the Christmas Tree Wreath for his Manhattan apartment.
A few times we went to cut down a tree in a caravan with neighbors or friends. My parents joined us when they were visiting from Texas or Florida. For many years, cutting down a tree on the day after Thanksgiving was our family tradition. It worked especially well when the boys were home from college between the two holidays.
Last Thanksgiving, our eldest son wanted his girlfriend to have the experience. Having grown up in California, V had never cut down a tree before. Because of my foot surgery, I stayed home. Darling V brought me along via FaceTime.
Later, we enjoyed a wonderful evening, as they decorated the tree. I pointed out bare spots while carefully unwrapping and waxing nostalgic over every single treasured ornament.
And I gotta say, it was one of the most beautiful Christmas trees ever! This year, not so much.
Not So Merry
Worried about a shortage of trees, hubby and I headed out last week to pick an already cut tree. Our plan is to set it up with lights in the family room this weekend. We’ll wait to decorate the tree with the kids.
Our fears were realized at our first two farm stops. Not only were the seven to eight foot trees more expensive, they looked dry, skimpy and misshaped. So, we headed off to a pricey nursery where we hoped the selection might be better.
As we were heading that way, at 35 miles an hour on a busy two-lane road, our merry making came to an abrupt end. A large SUV made a left hand turn from a parking lot, abruptly cutting us off. Hubby slammed on the brakes, but there wasn’t enough time or distance to stop in time. It was over in seconds, as the front end of our car hit his rear left wheel well. There was a sickening crunch as our grill disintegrated and the entire bumper was torn and crumpled.
No one was hurt. Our airbags didn’t even go off. But, boy was I seething inside. People immediately came running to check on us and help clear all the debris from the road. The SUV driver immediately apologized and said he was completely at fault. Apparently another driver going the opposite direction had stopped and waved him out. He never looked left and only realized his mistake when he was in the road.
And the guy who had motioned to go? He never stopped to see if everyone was ok or act as a witness. Worse, he weaved around the wreck and went on his merry way — bah humbug!
Counting Our Blessings
The car is drivable. Where we hit the SUV barely left a scratch but likely damaged the tire. Serious damage to his front end was caused by the car hitting a pole on the other side of the street.
In fact, after notifying our insurance agent, hubby took us to two more places before we settled on a decent tree. It looked pretty ridiculous to see the blanket I brought to protect the car’s roof, when the front was all smashed in lol!
Normally, we bring my now 12-year old Mini Cooper Clubman to get a tree. However, hubby pointed out that it would have sustained much more damage. And with the Mini’s low clearance and small size, it likely would have been totaled and we may have been seriously hurt.
We are waiting and worried that supply chain issues may mean a long wait for the new bumper and grill. Plus, the repair shop is scheduling an entire month out.
Making Merry 2.0
The good news is we are fine, we have a tree, and we have a wonderful Christmas to look forward to.
Both our adult sons are coming home for nearly two weeks through New Years! V will be joining us the entire time, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. And this year, no cast, scooter or crutches for me! My Scottie puppy, Whiskey, turns one, and our son’s lab mix will be here too.
All fully vaccinated and boosted, we plan to enjoy a number of outings that include a Steeler football game, visit to a Magical Phipps Winter Flower & Light Show, and Penguin hockey game (on ugly Christmas sweater night).
New this year is a VIP experience at Pittsburgh’s unique Liberty Magic theater, and Hip Hop Nutcracker. The later is described as, “re-imagines Tchaikovsky’s classic score through explosive hip-hop choreography.” Have you seen it?
Most importantly, we’ll celebrate Christmas Eve Mass in church, not watching it on TV at home.
“That’s what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown” — faith, family and friends.

Glad you enjoyed the table setting Rachelle! I do love my forest green Mini, but whenever it snows or is icy I leave it in the garage. And, I admit to feeling somewhat vulnerable when sitting or driving alongside some big truck. Poor hubby’s car looks awful, and they are still trying to track down parts. It’s gonna be awhile…
I SO ENJOYED “visiting your tablescape” AND, did a “doubletake”…we, too, do the Christmas tree napkin fold…but…my granddaughter, who was shopping w/me, @ Goodwill, said, “Nana, you “must have” these napkin holders…the very same as your photo depiction…I use Mine to “hols my kitchen tea towel” on the stove door…(& the hand towel in kiddos bathroom.) Debbee I love your narrative and so glad no one was hurt in your mishap. I also love your tree napkin fold and believe it or not, I have mastered that one. I have blue, white, red and green ones of all sizes and I adore them and the memories of growing up with trucks on a farm… as well as our early years of marriage, living on a working cattle and horse ranch in New Mexico. I’ve always loved the nostalgia of the farm trucks, and have crafted several fall and holiday wreaths around that theme as gifts. So it was lots of fun to style a Christmas table for my family using them.

I started decorating my chandeliers when there was no room for more Christmas trees (there’s another full size artificial one in the living room, plus smaller ones in our sons’ bedrooms) — and I had all these peacock ornaments I wanted to display. So I hung them from the dining room chandy. Not near as crazy as when I started putting skeletons in them for Halloween lol! Thanks for you kind words Linda. It should be a Christmas to remember for many happy reasons this year.

And, it’s mostly stuff I don’t have to store, as I’ll either give away as favors or use to embellish next year’s Christmas packages.

My brother-in-law built his own vintage style pick-up truck, although his is black. On years we spend Thanksgiving at their Charleston, SC home, we go as a family to pick out the tree and pose with it in the truck. People come over to admire it, and point and honk their horns as we caravan back to my sister’s. It’s lots of fun. Hope you get your dream one day Ricki!
Debbee, the tabletop is absolutely adorable with the DT finds – wow! My love is between the little lights with trucks and the icicles on the chandy! But the Nordic pattern and the PB are classics, so is the tree napkin fold. The tiered stand looks super cute all decked out for the table.
Okay, what a serious bummer in actually going to get the tree and that accident. You are very fortunate that no one was hurt and that the SUV driver admitted fault. Karma will take care of the guy who motioned you to go. No doubt the wait will be long for the parts, ugh.

Kinda ironic I had already chosen my table theme, and then we were in an accident while getting our own tree huh? We just heard; $3,000 and 4-5 days to repair, and aren’t scheduled to Jan 3rd (because of the holidays). Also discovered that they guy who waved the SUV on is legally liable, but no one got his plate #. Regardless, the other guy’s insurance is on the hook, and they only want to pay 80% because we technically hit him. Our adjuster was incredulous and is fighting it via arbitration. In the meantime, we have to pay the full deductible until it’s resolved — which could take until May! I’m trying to shake that off and focus on the fact the parts are on their way.
In the evenings, when the icicles and lights glow, the kitchen looks magical. And by this time tomorrow, the live tree will be set up in the adjacent room aglow too. Merry Christmas!
Ooooooohhhhhh…..yes, I CAN envision a bunch of those Christmas tree-folded napkins on the end of a buffet table!!! That would be SO COOL! Like a little forest! YES!!!
SUPER DUPER smart to grab up all the Christmas stuff you wanted before it was all gone. From the sound of it, that lady would have taken the whole store had you left her to it!!! Better to get what you want while it’s available, especially these days with so much in short supply! Those vintage trucks are NOT before my time (my paternal Grandfather had one on the farm), and I wax nostalgic every time I see one. What a cute theme!

Going forward, I’m going to have to give my readers a sneak peek at DT purchases, because the store tends to be OOS by the time the post is published. Hate seeing folks disappointed. How wonderful it must have been to be a kid visiting grandparents on a farm Alycia! My sister-in-law was raised on Missouri dairy farm and I love hearing her stories. Appreciate your kind thoughts Bonnie and that you enjoy my storytelling. But you should meet me in person, I have what they call “the gift of gab” lol! I was in marketing, and did a lot of writing for press releases, web content, speeches, and literature. Still plenty of time before Christmas to give the fold a try — it’s easy too. This past year, I’ve been lucky to be at DT at the right time I guess. It’s a shame that by the time I share my post(s) that the stores tend to be all out.

Your table is so pretty and I love the centerpiece you made! It all came together perfectly. I saw the red truck votives early in the season and talked myself out of them. I’m supposed to be weeding out, not adding to! I’m sorry now though because they look gorgeous on your table. Denise, I hadn’t thought of that — people lax in driving skills. I know what you mean about trying to reduce not add! No storage or display space left here. I already put things under beds, tops of closets, etc. lol! But, for a few bucks at DT I’ve been able to style new table themes using what I have. And, many of the items can be given as guest favors or go to Goodwill afterwards. I’m thrilled you’ll be trying out the napkin forest idea for your party. Really starting to get my merry on Mary, as I wrap gifts and continue to deck the halls while listening (and singing lol) to holiday tunes. Whiskey turned one yesterday, and for the first time in 2 years, there will be a Scottie tree and “mad for plaid” in one of my sons’ bedrooms. I too had foot surgery a year ago before Thanksgiving. It certainly stopped me from decorating for the holidays, but hubby and kids did a great job with preparing the meals. This year I am into “the holidays” again. Thanks for sharing your delightful decorations.

DT is a good source for fun and inexpensive crafting and decorating ideas! However, your really need to get there early and not procrastinate or the item(s) you want will be gone. I also get small table favors and stemware there for hand painting.
Your table almost depicts your story about going to find the perfect tree in the mountains. So glad to hear you and your hubby were ok and nothing is stopping your from decorating this year. Ah thanks Ann! So many fond memories surrounding a live tree. Although the most fragile and expensive ornaments go on the artificial tree in the living room (where the branches won’t droop), it’s the ones the boys made (tin foil, macaroni, margarine lids, etc.) on the live tree I value most of all. I found those DT items very early in November and I suspect they sold out quickly. Next year, I hope to revive our holiday open house and set up the tree fold napkins on the buffet. Ah thanks Joanne! When I saw the items at DT, I knew in a flash they’d compliment the glasses I already had. We just brought in the live tree and will put lights on it tonight. It will be a pretty view from the table. Do you do a live tree?
Debbee, I’m so glad you and your husband weren’t injured in the car accident. I’m sorry this put a damper on what should’ve been a fun day. It’s such an inconvenience to deal with car repairs, especially now with the supply chain issues. Thank goodness you have wonderful holiday plans to look forward to with your family!
I love your bringing home the Christmas tree theme! The little truck tea light holders look so cute all lit up. I had to chuckle when you wrote about the trip to Dollar Tree. I have to practice restraint when I go there or else I become like the lady with the full shopping cart! I definitely would’ve grabbed some of those light up icicles if I’d seen them. They look amazing hanging from your chandy. I also love the centerpiece with the forest of bottle brush trees on the wood slices. It’s always fun to hop with you, my friend. Merry Christmas!
Rebecca, thanks for your kind thoughts. Fortunately, the parts are on their way and will be here in two weeks. Because of the holidays, we won’t have the 4-5 day repair start until Jan 3. Good thing my theme didn’t turn into a tow truck though!
It’s hard not to catch the “fever” when you see someone piling items in a cart! Not sure what made me even notice the icicles, but I had a little eureka moment. Curious what impact DT raising some prices above $1 an item on the deals going forward?

Appreciate your kind thoughts Shannon. Today, Hubby brought the tree into the house and set it up with lights, which is viewable from the table. Happy to hear you enjoyed the tablescape! The chandy provides a lot of decorative impact, and was so fast and easy to do. It’s viewable from several rooms. A week from today our sons arrive and I can’t wait! Ah, thanks so much Niki! Over the weekend, both our adult sons arrived. So, last night, we used the table setting for dinner, right before decorating the live tree. Everyone loved the vintage truck touches from DT.
My daughter loves poppa’s red truck items. DT has more truck items this year but- I found a blanket and a string of red truck lights at Big Lots this year. I like to decorate matching gift bags too. Funny you mentioned a lady with a full cart at DT. Our DT is so busy between teachers and nursing homes decorating and employees stocking in spare time, you have to go multiple times. Glad 2021 is way behind us.
I always forget about checking out Big Lots for bargains! Sounds like you made some nice finds. I’m always surprised by the differences in inventory between DT’s — must be that finding time to stock and individuals coming in and buying out items? Yeah, 2020 and 2021 were both pretty rough. With the war in Ukraine, 2022 has had plenty of lows too. But, I continue to try and count my blessings, of which we, family and friends have fared pretty well. 2023 will bring two weddings, several overseas trips, and hubby and I will celebrate our 40th.
