To decorate for the rest of the summer season, I’ve created a refreshing garden wreath featuring watermelon and strawberries.
A large ant has invaded the garden and taken up residence on the large central leaf!
Not to worry, he’s harmless, and adds some humor to the scene. The ant is the reason I’ve named the garden wreath, Don’t Bug Me.
No DIY instructions to bore you with today. I’ve already provided how-to instructions on making a mesh wreath numerous times before. Check out Projects: Wreaths for tutorial posts and other decorative inspiration to make your own.
Come take a little tour of my garden…garden wreath that is!

Here’s the finished wreath hanging on my black front door.
It’s All About the Ribbon
The design inspiration for the Don’t Bug Me garden wreath was this bright, colorful watermelon print ribbon.
I came across it while searching online for specialty motif ribbons used in other projects, including Ladybug Wreath Bridges Seasons.
And, two different anchor, sailing theme wreaths, including Smooth Sailing Flying Red, White & Blue and Anchors Aweigh Sailboat Wreath.
In all four cases, none of my regular go-to craft or fabric stores had anything remotely like the ribbons I found on the Internet.
The problem with ordering online though, is most ribbons come in minimum 10-yard rolls. Most craft store rolls are three yards, and they frequently go on sale or offer 40% off coupons. Believe me, 10 yards goes a very long way, making multiple wreaths. And, there’s shipping costs associated with online orders too.
Materials to Make Your Own:
I’ve listed the materials used in making the Don’t Bug Me garden wreath, in case you are interested in recreating the look:
- tan 18″ pre-wired wreath frame (Michael’s)
- tan pipe cleaners (Michael’s)
- 20″ wide tan & white mesh (Michael’s)
- 2 1/2″ wide watermelon print wired ribbon & narrow 3/4″ grosgrain ribbon (Craft Online)
- raspberry polka dot 2 1/2″ wide wired ribbon & 3/4″ strawberry grosgrain ribbon (Michael’s)
- 2 1/2″ green plaid wired ribbon in 2 patterns (Pat Catan’s)
- wired 2 1/2″ wide burlap ribbon with green & white edge (Michael’s)
- 1 1/2″ wide black & white gingham wired ribbon (Pat Catan’s)
- pink flowers (Michael’s)
- strawberry vines (Old Allegheny Shoppe – local)
- garden leaf sign (local garden & landscape center)
Garden Wreath Tour
I took pictures on both my white interior door in the kitchen and the black front door — so don’t get confused as I switch back and forth!
It’s the exact same garden wreath.
Don’t you love the leaf-shaped sign? It’s the ta-da embellishment I always look for in creating my wreath designs. Made of metal, the sign is very light-weight and perfect for inserting into the garden wreath.
I just love this little guy. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate any ant ribbon I liked to embellish the garden wreath with. You know how I love to stick with a theme, LOL!
Adding the black and white gingham check helped to bring out the black in the ant and watermelon seeds in the ribbon.
As you can see from the materials list and the picture above, I used lots and lots of different ribbons patterns — in various widths.
Eight ribbon styles in all for the summer garden wreath!
What’s a Garden Without Flowers?
In addition to the raspberry-pink floral sprays scattered around the garden wreath, I also incorporated very special strawberry vine to tie-in with the ribbon.
From My Garden to Yours?
The Don’t Bug Me garden wreath is the first door decoration I’ve created that wasn’t for myself, a gift or a custom order. I just felt inspired to create!
Bee-cause I already have so many summer season wreaths decorating my abode, I have no room to display it.
And, then there’s the two patriotic-theme wreaths I also plan to leave up through the summer, including Uncle Sam Wreath Pedals Bike.
So, my good buddy Kem in Atlanta purchased the Don’t Bug Me wreath.
I’m already creating wreaths for Halloween, like the one above.

It’s so adorable!! Just the perfect wreath for summer. :)
Thanks Stacey! Hope you are having a great summer.
All your wreaths are super cute, Debbee.
It seems there’s no time in the day where the bugs don’t bug me, whether it’s morning, noon or night. Ants, gnats, mosquitoes, flies, spiders – you name it. I need to wear netting outside these days to tend my garden!
You are dedicated, tending your garden in the heat, humidity and bugs?! Me, not so much. I keep my hanging ferns and potted plants watered, tidy my little herb garden, and pull a few weeds now and again.
Yes please. Check is in the mail. It’s perfect because I have an invasion of ants, the kind so small you can barely see them. They don’t like windex and aa big ant would scare them away. Uncle Sam wreath had to come down. Safely wrapped until next year.
Boxed and will ship out via USPS tomorrow. Look for two other little critters in a small box inside — they are pot huggers to compliment your bee and ladybug wreaths.
My favorite part was the wide watermelon ribbon! I got ant ribbon on clearance several years ago @ Wal-Mart and have yet to use it. Red and white checked background (not gingham). I have a severe ribbon addiction and don’t use it anywhere near fast enough! A wreath MADE of ribbon is the answer, I guess! I really like all of your wreaths; your ideas are GREAT!
Thanks Kathy! Ditto on the ribbon addiction LOL! Please share if you make a ribbon wreath, would love to see a pix.
Absolutely beautiful – all of them!
Thanks Ann! I love making each around a theme, hunting for the perfect ribbon and ‘wow’ embellishment.
Actually, I think the black & white checkered ribbon and the black in the watermelon ribbon complements the ant perfectly!!! No ant ribbon necessary here!!! Those two ribbons you used are the perfect combination, and they make for a VERY festive piece of art! I never thought of going online for ribbon. Hmmmm….I’ll take that under consideration for Christmastime! I do a lot of my shopping at a wholesale place here in the KC area, so I do have lots of nice choices there. It’s always great, though, to check out all my options! The watermelon ribbon is just primo!!!!!!!!!!
Hi twin! I do think the checkered ribbon adds some nice punch. Do bee careful going online for ribbon and other craft supplies — it’s likely to inspire a ton of craft projects! It was a great source for summer ribbons. All the regular craft stores seemed to carry was 4th of July stuff. If you find you need just 3-4 yards of the watermelon ribbon for a project, let me know as I have leftover.
You are the queen of wreaths. It is so perfect for summer! My watermelons and ants will come out for August. :)
Queen of wreaths? What a lovely title to bestow upon the Queen of theme! Thank you!
Hi Deebee, just hopping back to let you know that you will be featured at SYC today. Hugs, Jann
That’s great, thanks so much Jann! It’s the first time I’ve ever been featured on SYC.
Your wreaths are absolutely beautiful and this one is perfect for summer!
Hi Mary Beth, and thanks for taking the time to visit Debbee’s Buzz! I enjoy the creative process and hunt for the perfect ribbon and embellishments, The best part is seeing pix of them hanging on people’s doors around the country.
You do such wonderful wreaths! Beautiful!
Thanks so much Carole! I know you are a quilter extraordinaire, do you make wreaths too?
Hi,
Do you sell these wreaths? I would love to buy the watermelon garden one.
Hi Mary, I tried to respond to you last week, but was in Iceland and had trouble with Internet connections to my blog. Yes, I sell several wreaths a month. Usually they are custom orders or people who see one I made and want something similar. Contact me at buzz@debbeesbuzz.com if you are interested. I have more watermelon ribbon and could make something similar. May also be able to find another leaf sign if I hurry to the landscape center.
OMG, I love that watermelon ribbon. They are all so beautiful. Your wreaths are fabulous. Stop by Thursday Favorite Things since you are one of my features. Hugs, Bev
Beverly, how very nice of you to feature my wreath — thank you! I would have responded sooner but I have been out of the country on vacation.
Would it be possible to purchase a watermelon wreath without the leaf? Thanks for your time,
Sure! Besides, I’m not sure I can locate another leaf anyway. Most of my wreaths are custom orders — pick a theme, color, size, and price limit.
Wow, Debbee, loving the Don’t bug me. Cute and so creative.
Thanks Linda. I think it’s everyone’s favorite wreath I’ve made so far?
Love the festive summer wreath! That watermelon ribbon is so unique. Thanks for sharing at Tuesday Turn About!
Thank you Crissy. I’m on vacation with spotty Internet coverage and will check back on the party when I return.
Beautiful wreaths!. I am so glad I came across your blog
I’m so glad u found me too Karie! Thanks for stopping by.
Crazy insane for the watermelon wreath. I think Beverly needs it for her watermelon tablescape.
Michele you r so right! Gotta get myself to DT to pick up the watermelon craft supplies. Hope u r having a great summer,
Another beautiful wreath! I love how summary the ribbons and accents make it feel. Pinned.
Joanne, always great hearing from u! Thanks for stopping by.
So cute Debbee and perfect for summer! Thanks for sharing at TFT!
Everyone loves that watermelon ribbon! Thanks for stopping by Amber.
Do you have instructions for the watermelon wreath. If not could you tell me if you could make me one. Your wreaths and creations are so well done , I enjoy your website tremendously!
Have you ever made a mesh wreath before Bonnie? I didn’t post instructions for this particular wreath because so many previous posts included step by step tutorials. Because the watermelon wreath included faux silks and greens, I’d suggest checking out Ladybug Wreath For New, Existing Homes Bridges Seasons. What makes this wreath unique is the watermelon ribbon everyone loves. If you’d like me to make you a custom one, I do have more watermelon ribbon in stock. That was a huge wreath and bow, so I’d need to make it smaller. For a feel of options, prices, check out my Etsy shop at DebbeesBuzzBoutique. Depending on what you wanted, it’d probably be $115-135.
Your wreaths are all so cute!
Hi Vanessa, it’s nice to “meet” you — loved your recent shovel waterfall project (so clever)! I just discovered some leftover watermelon ribbon from that wreath project, so I just started another one for my Etsy shop DebbeesBuzzBoutique
I love your wreaths, especially the watermelon wreath. I would love for you to join my Sunday’s Best Linky Party.
Thanks Rhonda. I’m starting work on two new summer wreaths today; one using leftover watermelon ribbon. Will check out the party, thanks for the invite.
Hi. We chose your beautiful Wreath to feature at Summer Fun 2019 Link Party–please stop by and grab a button! https://twochicksandamom.blogspot.com/2019/07/summer-fun-link-party-2019-features.html
Thanks for hosting such a great party and the huge compliment of selecting my wreath to feature!
Your wreaths are amazing. I wish I had your talent!
That’s very nice of you to say Catherine! But, mesh and ribbon wreaths aren’t difficult to make. In fact, there’s numerous DIY wreath projects posts on my blog — most recently DIY Nautical Sailboat Wreath: Raise Anchor.
I see you and your husband love to travel, as do Mr. Buzz and I. You might enjoy; Visit Amazing Ancient Athens, Greece: Part 1 or Incredible Iceland Trip Ten Day Adventure, Part 1. Another adorable wreath, Debbee! You are amazing!
Julie, that’s very sweet of you to say!
Your wreaths are absolutely darling, Debbbee. Thank you for sharing at Party In Your PJ’s!
Thanks so much Ann! Really enjoying the party!
Watermelon is my absolute favorite summer fruit and I ADORE your sweet watermelon wreath! Pinned :)
Thank you Marie! I looked far and wide for that special watermelon ribbon. And, I made the mistake of selling the wreath through my Etsy shop, DebbeesBuzzBoutique after a dedicated reader spotted it. Couldn’t say no! So, I’m thinking of ordering more supplies to make one for myself.
Those wreaths are so creative and adorable. Very talented. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks so much Samatha! I love making wreaths and am especially delighted to inspire others.
All of your wreaths are beautiful! I am a ribbon lover, so I always enjoy finding great ribbon.
Thanks so much Judy and thanks for taking the time to stop by! Ribbon can be addictive can’t it lol?! Hope you are having a great summer.
Your wreaths are so amazing! The work you put into them is incredible. I love both of them. Have a great week.
Ahh, thanks so much Meagan! It’s less about me though, and all about the ribbon and embellishments.
You always have the most beautiful wreaths. I just recently began making them in the last year, but mine are never as elaborate as what you come up with. I have been making them for a resident in a nursing home, and she seems to love them.
How very, very nice of you to make wreaths for the nursing home resident! I think the “special sauce” for my wreaths is I build them around a “wow” sign or central element. You can easily do the same. Just make sure whatever it is, that isn’t light weight.
