I recently created a mesh sailboat wreath for my sister B’s home in Charleston, S.C.
Like my sister-in-law L’s Ladybug Wreath Bridges Seasons, B and her husband had moved to downsize.
B also wanted a wreath that wasn’t too big, and could decorate her front door for multiple seasons.
Additionally, B had admired and coveted a summer wreath I created that hangs at the peak of my covered porch. The grapevine wreath is dominated by an 18-inch sailboat, supported by a large circumference base. Too big for B’s front door.
Living in Charleston on the water, and married to an experienced sailor, a nautical theme was agreed to. And to coordinate with B’s new porch furniture and pillows, aqua was chosen as the accent color. So off I went, in search of the perfect ribbon and a smaller sailboat.

I’ve been working on a number of DIY projects lately, and decided to share a seasonal ladybug wreath made for my sister-in-law (L).
While celebrating Thanksgiving in Washington this past fall, L and her husband (M) surprised us with two pieces of exciting news.In addition to a pending retirement, they had decided to downsize from a large home to a one-story house. The new home would still be near family and able to accommodate overnight visitors, but allow them to easily age in place.
With exceptionally nice fall weather, hubby and I were able to tour the model house, peruse color and finish selections, and see their lot. I just loved the floor plan and Northern Virginia community.
It planted a seed in the back of my mind too, and now I have a bit of a “bug” for a new house! We have lived in the same home we had built as newlyweds. And although we’ve done a lot of improvements and remodeling, it will never have an open, single story floor plan with high ceilings. But, we’ll stay right where we are, until the boys are married and settled somewhere.
Now that M and L have moved into their lovely new abode, let me share the ladybug wreath with bee skep I made for their front door.

Sharing a quick and easy DIY moss bunny wreath with basket of flowers; perfect for Easter or spring.
When looking for design inspiration for a wreath or door hanging, I usually start from an embellishment, accent or sign. That inspirational piece serves as a focal point, while also setting a theme or color scheme to build the rest of the wreath around. In this case, the bunny-shaped frame with built-in basket is the creative star of the show.
While looking for St. Patrick’s Day tableware at Marshall’s (they had nada), I came across an adorable, moss bunny wreath frame. I’ve seen bunny-shaped grapevine and even moss covered door hangings a plenty. But, this was the first one that came with an ample basket to hold a floral arrangement.
Good thing this was such a fast project, because with only two weeks between St. Patrick’s Day and Easter, there isn’t much time to switch up decorations and tableware around the house.

For spring, I’ve created a watering can wreath, or door decoration. If it isn’t round, is it a wreath?
I was supply shopping at Pat Catan’s, for a totally different project, when I came across this unique watering can frame. It’s actually a sort-of basket, made of rust-colored wire and natural brown grapevine.
Because I knew the watering can wreath was going to hang on a black front door, I spray painted the frame white.
Although I love creating wreaths made of deco mesh and ribbon, I was inspired to try something different with the basket frame.
For this DIY project, I had to figure it out as I went along.

After putting away the rest of my winter decorations and tableware, I couldn’t wait to get started on creating this Let Me Call You Sweetheart wreath for Valentine’s Day.
Gosh, I hate packing up holiday decorations and dishes! Tableware in particular, because I am constantly reshuffling things around in order to deal with a shortage of storage space. It’s my darn fault, because I just can’t part with my stuff.
I really don’t have much in the way of Valentine’s Day decor and specially dishes. In fact, it’s the holiday I have the least in terms of decorations. Maybe because it’s a more girly holiday and I raised two boys? And, there’s the calendar problem.
By that I mean, Valentine’s Day falls just after the big trifecta of holidays — Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not enough time after Christmas and winter seasonal decorations go down. Before you know it, it’s time for hearts, flowers and chocolate. OK, there’s always time for chocolate!
So, I decided I needed to make a Valentine’s Day wreath, and I had just the thing to help indulge my crafting itch. (more…)
